Firewood is an expensive commodity so it is important to make sure it is stored correctly so none of it goes to waste. Here are our tips on the best way to store logs and keep them dry:
Invest in a Log Store - a purpose built log store is the best solution for storing your firewood to keep it dry. It should be positioned south facing to get direct sunlight and allow good air flow. A purpose built log store should come with a raised floor to keep your firewood off the ground. The ventilation is important to ensure the wood does not sweat or get damp and mouldy. If you are looking for an alternative solution then try making your own store using old builder's dumpy bags and old pallets.
Location - make sure that whatever store you go for that it is placed in the correct location. The fuel should not ideally be placed directly on the floor or in any area which may pool with water. Also make sure that there are no overhanging branches or gutters which may drip on to the fuel.
Access - it is important that your store is easy to refill and dispense the firewood. Reduce the need for shovelling and bending and lifting as much as possible. Make sure the route to and from your log store is not blocked and is easily accessible
Security - consider whether your store needs a padlock or other locking mechanism
Manufacture - make sure your store is made from an appropriate material so that it is strong and robust, is waterproof and will not rot or rust
Rotation - when storing your firewood make sure you have an ability to rotate your logs so that what was placed in first is first out. This ensures that the older fuel gets used up and does not deteriorate.
